Baptist Church of Segregation

My parents put me in a local Baptist private school so I would not have to go to school with the Blacks in the Seventies. This was in the height of segregation in Louisiana. You think the problem with race ended after the Little Rock incident in 1957 and Martin Luther King’s death in the sixties? Wrong! The good middle-class white parents put their children in private schools to avoid integration.

The Southern Baptists was formed due to the civil war and the slavery issue. My dad if he were alive would argue that the Civil War was all about state’s rights and he would be right(state’s rights to own slaves). I know the Southern Baptist’s finally apologized for slavery but it was just weird learning about the Ten Commandments and Jesus and skipping over loving your neighbor as yourself. I guess they inserted “white” neighbors in their text.

The truth is most of all our congregations are segregated in our country and I’m not just talking about the Baptists.
